Climate change
Glencore supports the global climate change goals set out in the United States Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and the Agreement to limit global temperature rise to well below 2°C by the
second half of this century. We recognise our responsibility to contribute to the global effort to achieve the goals of the Paris Agreement by decarbonising our own emissions. Our well-positioned portfolio supports the transition to a low-carbon economy, while meeting the need for universal access to reliable energy.
In the DRC, we have partnered with the government through the SNEL (Société Nationale d’Électricité) as part of a public-private partnership. Following a 475 million dollars investment, we were able to contribute to the rehabilitation of two turbines at the Inga dam, allowing the production of 400 megawatts of power. As part of the project, 2,000 km of transmission lines have been upgraded to provide this electricity to more than one million people in Kolwezi. Not only does it provide our cobalt operations with clean energy, but it also supports the needs of local communities living in the vicinity of our operations.
